Ecological Services

ECOLOGY

Knowledge is the basis of sound land use management and planning.  The early consideration of natural heritage features (e.g., woodlands, wetlands and species at risk) is essential to understand fully project requirements, avoid regulatory delays, and identify opportunities to mitigate potential impacts through design excellence and the implementation of best management practices.

Terrapex employs a growing team of professional biologists to help its clients navigate the complex web of environmental legislation, regulation and natural resource management policies that govern the land use planning and development process.

Terrapex biologists are experienced in the application of technical protocols approved by regulatory agencies (e.g., Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks) and can provide a range of services related to terrestrial and aquatic ecology.  These services typically inform due diligence assessments, guide land use planning and development, secure permits and approvals, and promote regulatory compliance.  Available services include the following:

  • Species at Risk assessments (including Butternut Health Assessment)
  • Ecological Land Classification (ELC) to identify vegetation communities
  • Surveys for plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals (including bats)
  • Identification and assessment of woodlands, wetlands, fish and wildlife habitat and other natural heritage features
  • Recommendations and design input to mitigate potential development impacts on fish and wildlife
  • Compliance monitoring during construction and post-development effectiveness monitoring
  • Preparation of Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) and Natural Heritage Evaluations (NHE)
  • Authorizations/permits under the Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act and Conservation Authorities Act
  • Peer Review

Terrapex biologists may provide these services independently or collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team that can include professional engineers, geoscientists, hydrogeologists, GIS specialists, fluvial geomorphologists and/or landscape architects.
