Geotechnical Engineer – Ottawa

Terrapex is searching for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to grow and manage our geotechnical division in Ottawa.  The successful candidate will be able to provide geotechnical engineering services on a variety of projects including, land development, transportation, commercial/industrial projects, and material inspection and testing services in the Ottawa region, working out of our office in Ottawa.

Working under the leadership and support of our Geotechnical Services Line Manager and geotechnical staff in Toronto, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • expanding our geotechnical laboratory;
  • training junior environmental staff to carry out geotechnical testing and inspection;
  • preparation of technical proposals and reports;
  • management of geotechnical investigations,
  • providing field inspection and testing services;
  • recruiting and training junior geotechnical engineering staff;
  • development and maintenance of client relationships;
  • managing geotechnical staff and resource allocation in the Ottawa office; and
  • overseeing the administration of the Ottawa geotechnical office, with support from Terrapex resources in Ottawa and Toronto.

Requirements and Experience:

  • degree from an accredited university in Geological, Geotechnical, or Civil (geotechnical option) Engineering;
  • registered as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario;
  • a minimum of 7 years of diverse geotechnical engineering and inspection and testing experience;
  • strong technical and project management skills;
  • superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • valid Driver’s License; and
  • knowledge of local geotechnical conditions and the regional market.

Successful candidates will also possess:

Geotechnical Engineer – Toronto

Terrapex is searching for an experienced junior to intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team as a Geotechnical Project Manager.  The successful candidate can choose to work out of our head office in Toronto or out of our satellite branch office in Hamilton.

Working under the leadership and support of our geotechnical services manager and geotechnical staff in Toronto, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and regular communication with clients;
  • Project coordination, technical leadership, and technical design for public and private sector clients in Ontario;
  • Experience in developing and administering project proposals, work plans, and project costing/budgeting;
  • Responsible for invoicing clients on a monthly basis as assigned by senior management;
  • Directly responsible for the health and safety of any person working on an assignment; conduct project site inspections to ensure compliance with all safety and government regulations;
  • Provide training to junior and intermediate staff;
  • Oversee multiple geotechnical projects simultaneously;
  • Conduct and or manage field investigations to acquire appropriate data;
  • Prepare and review geotechnical reports;
  • Geotechnical and materials engineering on a wide variety of projects including commercial, industrial, infrastructure and others;

Construction Health and Safety Specialist – Toronto

We have an exciting opportunity for an on-site construction safety consultant for a client who is building a new data Centre in Scarborough. The position is a contract term for the duration of the construction project, and is anticipated to run to approximately October 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • University degree or college diploma in a relevant field (occupational health & safety,
    environmental and/or safety engineering, safety management, industrial hygiene,
    sciences);
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with health and safety in the construction industry,
    preferably with data centre construction or large projects;
  • Certification (or working towards) CRSP (preferred).

In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • proficient with management/supervision of high-risk activities including electrical safety,
    excavation, fall protection, material handling and crane operations;
  • experienced in communicating and problem solving as a team with subcontractors;
  • a background and knowledge working with trades such as electricians, ironworkers,
    pipefitters, etc. (preferred);
  • an understanding of the complexities of multi-employer worksites;
  • experienced trainer on construction safety topics;
  • knowledge of Ontario safety regulations;
  • knowledge of environmental regulations (advantageous);
  • experience conducting construction site safety audits and inspections;
  • experience conducting incident investigations and reporting;

Intermediate to Senior Geotechnical Technician – Toronto

Terrapex is searching for an Intermediate to Senior Geotechnical Engineering Technician/Technologist to provide geotechnical field inspection and testing services, on a variety of projects including transportation, land development, residential/commercial/industrial projects, working out of Terrapex’s Toronto branch.

As a member of our Geotechnical Service Line, under the direction of a Geotechnical Engineer, you will be responsible for assignments which include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspection of the installation of driven pile, caissons, reinforcing steel, tiebacks, retaining walls, and ground improvements;
  • Inspection and approval of foundation bearing surfaces;
  • Subgrade inspection / proof rolling and approval for pavement construction, slab-on-grade, and engineered fill;
  • Assisting the geotechnical engineer in field activities including but not limited to borehole layout, geotechnical drilling, test pitting, surveying, vibration monitoring, and pre-construction condition surveys;
  • Conducting field testing such as compaction testing on earth fill, granular, and asphalt materials, plastic concrete sampling and testing, as part of QC or QA programs;
  • Assisting in laboratory testing as needed, for soils and aggregates;
  • Participating in all assigned Health and Safety training programs;
  • Attending in technical training programs as required;
  • Maintaining strong and effective working relationship with Terrapex staff as well as clients and subcontractors;
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Successful candidates will also possess:

  • Post-secondary education in Construction Engineering &/or Civil Engineering Technology would be considered an asset. Secondary School Diploma will also be considered based on previous work experience, trade or training;
  • Previous relevant experience minimum of 3 years is required.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn;
  • Available to work flexible schedules including occasional weekends, work in various weather conditions, may require additional hours and travel to site locations for extended periods of time within Ontario;
  • Good oral and written English communication skills;

Project Manager, Environmental Services - Toronto

Terrapex’s Toronto Office is searching for an experienced environmental practitioner to manage environmental site assessment and remediation projects of varying complexity located in Ontario, and particularly within the Greater Toronto Area.

Working under the leadership and support of our Site Assessment and Remediation practice area manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing moderately complex Phase One and Phase Two environmental site assessments, site remediations, risk assessments, and related projects as assigned within their area of expertise.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities and accountabilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing scopes of work and prepare and submit proposals;
  • Managing projects from start to finish, including designing work programs, identifying and allocating resources, planning, delegating and scheduling project tasks, managing budgets and deliverables;
  • Overseeing the preparation of accurate and complete reports and performing QA/QC on technical work;
  • Developing and maintaining trustful relationships with clients;
  • Providing technical expertise and advice to project staff;
  • Promoting a safety culture in all aspects of work; and,
  • Participating in business development and other corporate activities and initiatives.

Requirements and Experience:

  • University degree or college diploma in a relevant field, such as environmental science, earth science, geology, chemistry, environmental or civil engineering, environmental technology, site assessment and remediation;
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in an environmental consulting role;
  • Prior recognition as a “Qualified Person” (per O. Reg. 153/04) by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, or being immediately eligible for such recognition;
  • A thorough understanding of regulations and standards applicable to site assessment and remediation work programs, such as O. Reg. 153/04, O. Reg. 406/19, Reg. 903, O. Reg. 278/05, CSA and ASTM Standards;
  • Strong technical and project management skills;
  • Superior interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; and,
  • A valid Driver’s License.

Junior or Recent Graduate - Hydrogeologist - Toronto

Terrapex is seeking a recent graduate to support our growing Hydrogeology Services team at our Toronto office location.  The role will also involve occasionally performing other geoscience and geotechnical tasks for our diverse clients who offer challenging and interesting projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide variety of field work tasks. Primary tasks will include supervision / observation of programs of drilling and monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, soil and bedrock  logging, soil sampling, groundwater level monitoring, installation of dataloggers, and slug tests.
  • Deliver work in rigorous accordance with Terrapex and client-based safety protocols.
  • Perform a wide variety of office tasks. Primary tasks will include data compilation and tabulation, charts and graphs, preparation of borehole records, map and figure production, review of compliance of water quality regulations, analysis of field tests, writing and review of environmental trends.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in earth science, or civil engineering with an emphasis in water resources, and at least two courses in hydrogeology.
  • Eligible or interest in working towards professional registration (P.Geo., P.Eng.).
  • Recent graduate or 1-3 years of relevant professional experience (preferably in consulting).
  • Understanding of soil and bedrock classifications, overburden and bedrock drilling methods, in-situ hydraulic testing (slug, pumping tests), and soil and groundwater sampling protocols.
  • Familiarity with geoscience software such as borehole logging, aquifer testing, Surfer, ArcGIS, and/or groundwater modelling.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions. Most field work will be within the GTA, but sometimes may require working in remote locations with overnight stays for several days.
  • Ability to work in a team focused, dynamic and diverse consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime, as required.
  • Driven to provide high quality and dependable results.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory frameworks for groundwater withdrawal, contaminated sites assessment and management, and environmental assessment would be assets
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle on short notice.
